If you love your art on the geeky side then do check out the Kinetica Art Fair on 3rd to the 6th of February at Ambika P3, Marylebone Road, London, NW1 5LS. This is the UK's only art fair dedicated to kinetic, robotic, sound, light and time-based ar. If you're wondering what kinetic art is well according to Wikipedia it's 'art that contains moving parts or depends on motion for its effect. The moving parts are generally powered by wind, a motor or the observer…" Of course it's spread further now with new technologies including digital/audio/video media, but essentially it's usually going to be something like Wii on steroids. My first experience of kinetic art was via Wilf, the mad inventor on Vision On, a kid's art show in the Seventies. Lol. Still, names you will recognise that have pioneered the scene include Maholy Nagy, Jean Tinguely, Marcel Duchamp and Alexander Calder during the 1900s, modern contemporary kinetic and electronic artworks utilise and warp technology itself, to explore, nurture and comment on our evolutionary processes and challenge scientific and universal exploration.
There are a whopping 600 exhibits at the art fair, some of the contemporary artists include: Tim Lewis, Interactive Agents, Baileybots, GV Art London, Patrick Heide Gallery, Computer Arts Society, Ga Young Jun, Alex Posada, Carlo Bernardini, Ray Lee, Gregory Barsamian, Jim Bond, Seeper, Michalous & Sarantopoulou, the Trope Troupe, Cabaret Mechanical Theatre, Tengiz Sepiashvilli, Jerzy Kediora, Arthertz, Adam Lilien, David Cranmer, The Multiple Store, Basedonair Productions, Tomomi Sayuda, Peter Pritchard, Tanja Vujinovic / Ultramono, Skin Graph, Tine Bech, Middlesex University, Thames Valley University, Jerzy Kediora, Jasmine Pradissitto, Davide Angheleddu, and Kristoffer Myskja.
They're also making a big deal about a performance artist called Stelarc who's rather famous for wearing a load of synth drums all over his body and knocking out a few beats. Not my thing but there you go. Here are a few installations to keep an eye out for if you do go…
Cécile Colle and Ralf Nuhn’s ‘Exit-Wall’
Ga Young Jun's 'Whistling Sea'
Ioannis Michalous
Anatolii Sloiko, Roman Gavrilove and Basedonair Productions ‘Wings Balance Flight Simulator 2010.’
