I had a comment recently from Paul Cooper over at A Patchwork Of Flesh and was intrigued by his concept to produce a collection of interpretations on the theme of the (in)famous Mary Shelley (with a little help from Boris Karloff) character Frankenstein, or rather Frankenstein’s Monster. One is the doctor who created it, the other is the amalgamation of body parts that makes up a lumbering hulk complete with bolts to the neck, flat head, and a rather ungainly gait, although who can blame the creature, it’s been to hell and back.
I thought it might be fun to up the ante, the project is open to artists of all descriptions, kids, amateurs, pros, just about anyone who can put, pen, crayon, paint, print to paper. Whatever your medium Coop’s project might provide you with some light relief, I found it to be great fun, especially as it’s something I didn’t have to conceive as weighty or profound, it’s just a bit of fun, an emotion I have all but forgotten recently, especially since I’ve been stuck out all hours of the day in the back yard scraping rust of my damned print drying rack.
So, here’s goes, my contribution to Paul’s Frankenstein project entitled ‘Frankie Howerdstein‘.
Coop’s ultimate ambition is to put on an exhibition of all the works amassed at a gallery, which sounds like a lot of fun. The exhibition will come to fruition once he has a large enough collection of portraits of Frankenstein’s Monster in as many different styles and in as many different media as possible. His only stipulation is that each piece is a size of 2.5 inches by 3.5 inches (standard artist trading card size) and that each card has name, date, title and anything else you care to add on the back.
Each card will be uploaded at http://apatchworkofflesh.blogspot.com to produce an on-line gallery, each posting can include a link to your own portfolio or personal blog. Here’s a few others from the collection I’ve enjoyed.
Frankenstein’s Monster by Illustrator David Lee Ingersoll – he’s actually submitted a whole family of monsters for the project.
Frankenstein’s Monster by Illustrator Warwick Johnson Cadwell
Coop will be leaving blank cards with instructions and mailing address in galleries, colleges, art shops, on buses, handing them out in the street and wherever else I can think of. If you would like to get involved send your Frankenstein Monster portrait to:
