If you’re sitting on the other side of the Atlantic right now and can’t make it to the European continent for the Venice Biennale and Art Basel this June then no worries, the New York Arts Community are pulling out all the stops to provide East Coast Americans with a viable alternative with a whole selection of events happening around the city. Don’t worry, even if you can’t make it to NYC I’ve slipped in a few exhibitions further afield – so no complaints okay?

Bushwick Arts FestivalBushwick Open Studios (June 5-7th) BOS is an art festival focusing on open studios of local artists. Also included are myriad other platforms for exhibiting and celebrating the creative energy of Bushwick. Anyone in the community is welcome to participate by presenting artwork Atlantic Avenue Artwalk Atlantic Avenue Art Walk (June 6-7th) Take a short, self-guided tour of the ArtWalk area "curated" by Sasha of Proteus Gowanus; Ouigi of The Brooklyn Circus; Brooklyn historian, Erik Fortmeyer and fine artists Chris Piazza and Mac Premo.

LIC Bike Parade


Socrates Sculpture Park‘s (June 6th) second annual LIC Bike Parade, a family and community event inviting children of all ages to explore the creative and functional potential of adaptive reuse, by using recycled materials to repair and decorate their bikes.

Figment Festival Figment Festival (June 12-14th) is an annual arts event on Governors Island, featuring artwork of all media, from installation to performance to music to games and many things in between. Participation is open to any artist who would like to share their work.

NOrth Side Arts Festival

 

NOrth Side Music and Arts Festival (June 11-14th) The L Magazine hosts a four-day celebration of New York City’s independent music and art scene, at over fifty music venues and galleries throughout the Williamsburg and Greenpoint neighbourhoods.

Lower Manhattan Cultural Council presents Sitelines 2009: White by ZviDance in collaboration with composer Scott Killian on Governor’s Island using the Fort Jay’s eerie sense of abandonment to reflect on our attempts to feel secure by arming our borders.

If you’re not in NYC this June here are a few other exhibitions on in the States to keep you happy ;)

Maureen O’Connor‘s paintings are on exhibition at Atlantic Works Gallery in Boston.

Ione Citrin work is featured in the New Arts Program’s Annual Salon Exhibition in Berks, PA

Brendan Lott work is featured in a group exhibition at Baer Ridgway Exhibitions in San Francisco.

Jennifer Tenace work is in a group show at the Brand Library & Art Center in Glendale, CA.

Or just give up and lie in the sun – it’s a free world after all (well it used to be).
