So… I’ve been using Photoshop to create my latest work, there’s almost a month of meticulous drawing involved and today I boot up my external Lacie drive today, start Photoshop, open the file and guess what, it’s corrupted, what’s more so is the back up from two days ago.
I’m going to have to upgrade from USB2 to firewire and build a better scratchdisk, it’s the only solution I can think of. Essentially a month of my life has just gone in the bin. I’ve had a look around for a way to recover the files but all the software solutions are in Windows format (what a surprise) plus and here’s the most worrying aspect about the whole debacle, each file (which was at least 80+ MB each) is now registering at 32kb.
So I guess even if I moved it to a PC and tried to recover there’d be nothing in it anyway. So, if you’re an artist and you work in Photoshop beware, this could happen to you. I feel totally depressed today, all that work, effort, time, heart and soul poured in to a total waste of everything you could possibly imagine.
I am probably going to start again, I will back up all my work ten times from now on and keep some of the backups on my Mac – let’s hope that makes a difference.
I’d love to show you what I’ve been working on, I’d thought it may just have been my best work yet, entitled "Outta Space", but I can’t, because it is no more. What a way to spend one’s life, at the beck and call of technology. I am still waiting on a few bolts from the guys near the Tate who sold me my print table, I also need to clear more junk from the basement to make some room, but everything is on hold for now. I’m tempted to spend a week in a drunken haze just to give myself a break but I am sure before long, or even short, I will be slaving away once again to finish this piece (even if it kills me).
Gawd I hate technology.
Its just blinking typical isnt it! We will only learn when it happens to us – it happened to me a while back, now I use time machine AND do a big back up every week.
…its turned into an obsession, Im thinking of getting an old PC, ramming it full of disks and using as a network back up pc.

I had a Lacie hard drive eat 2 years of work. I have met many other artists to suffer at the hands of Lacie. I am hoping to get my new external apple soon.

OMG 2 years? I feel for you mate – that is a heavy burden to carry – I’m currently scouting out a few options, firewire sata drives, but ultimately I think burning has the right idea, get a PC and pack it to the hilt with drives, sort of a personal server I suppose. Thank gawd I’m moving on to printing soon, at least I will have something to prove I do actually create art, plus of course I can store the transparencies for prosperity – as long as the house doesn’t burn down! Oh well I suppose I’ll end up daubing the walls of caves if that happens…

Thanks Vera, yep I’m working on it – although… I think there maybe a technological conspiracy aimed at me – I’ve just bought a Lacie Firewire External Drive and am now moaning at the store because it doesn’t work lol.

Probably configure it to run RAID 1 (Mirroring), you get just 1TB, but your data is constantly backed up and backed up….this doesn’t save you from accidental deletes…..you probably need Time Capsule for that.

Black holes seem to be popping up every where, I am sorry for your inconvenience. I feel for you because I have been down that road more than a few times myself. But look at the bright side, now you get to enjoy creating the true absolute best work the world will ever be able to view. And I bet you, that in the end, your lost creations will pale comparatively to your second and consequently the one you were meant to share with the world. Seriously I believe everything happens for a reason. So when adverse events come knocking on your door just keep it open,hell might as well throw a party and undertake to do the work joyfully. Hopefully later in time, you will be able to see the humor of it all and laugh with the shadow side of our Universelves. You are Divine and very capable of creating all that you desire, or not,in this world. Better luck as you proceed ahead. I look forward to seeing your works. Now I must try to track down some absent mail containing a particularly important return envelope that seems to have been hijacked by a snail so that I too, might be able to show some of my creations as well.
